ASHL Statement on Fall ’20 Season for Etobicoke, Scarborough, and York locations

November 16th, 2020

TORONTO, ONT. — Based on public health restrictions from the Provincial Government of Ontario, and the City of Toronto, Canlan Ice Sports has announced that the remainder of the ASHL Fall ’20 season at our EtobicokeScarborough, and York locations has been cancelled. The Fall ’20 ASHL season was initially slated to run from September to the end of December.

On October 10th the three ASHL locations within the City of Toronto were initially restricted from gameplay due to Provincial public health orders. As such, the Fall ’20 season in EtobicokeScarborough, and York was put on pause until such a time that gameplay would be permitted.

As of November 14th, there has been no such change in the Provincial restrictions as the City of Toronto was placed into the red tier of the province’s revised COVID-19 response framework. Further orders directly from the City of Toronto have prevented a resumption of games until at least no earlier than December 12th.

Canlan Ice Sports’ President and CEO, Joey St-Aubin indicated that the decision to cancel the remainder of the Fall ’20 season for the Toronto locations was largely based on these restrictions, and was one that was not taken lightly.

As we continue to closely monitor the public health restrictions in Ontario, and in particular, the City of Toronto, we have determined that the resumption of the Fall ’20 season is no longer feasible. The combination of current circumstances in addition to limited number of weeks remaining in the calendar year have required for us to come to this difficult decision.

It’s our sincere hope for our community that the steps taken by our Government to mitigate the spread of the virus will result in a reduction of cases and hospitalizations over the next several weeks, allowing us to get back to game play in the safe playing environments we’ve created at Canlan Ice Sports locations. As such, we will shift our focus towards the Winter ’21 season (January-April) at our Toronto locations as we continue to provide a safe environment for our players,” St-Aubin said.

ADDITIONAL FAQ’S

What is a guaranteed game?
Each ASHL division has a preset number of guaranteed games each season. Due to the shortened Fall ’20 season at our Toronto locations, most teams played between 1-2 guaranteed games.

How is the credit determined?
Each team’s credit is determined by calculating the dollar value of each game based on their team fee, and subsequently multiplying that by the number of remaining guaranteed games a team has yet to play. In the event the team still has an outstanding balance on their team fee, that balance will be deducted from any credit amount.

How can we use our credit?
Team credits reside with the Team Rep, with the credit amount being applied towards the team’s fee. Team reps will be responsible for notifying their location when they’d like to have their credit applied. Unused credits will expire as of December 31st, 2021.

e.g. A team with a $500.00 credit can apply that against the team fee for the Winter ’21 season and receive $500.00 off the price.

I played on an Individual Team, how does that impact my credit?
Participants on an individual team — a team where players played the individual registration fee instead of a team fee — will receive an individual credit based on the guaranteed number of games they had remaining.
